Prof PM Soundar Rajan graduated from College of Engineering, Guindy, Chennai in 1973 as an Electronics and Communication Engineer. He obtained his Masters from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in the same field in 1989. He commenced his professional career in 1973 with Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Bangalore, DRDO. During his tenure at LRDE he designed and developed digital communication systems. From 1978-1996, he served in the Aeronautical Development Establishment. Flight test Instrumentation and Telemetry was his forte, working on UAVs and IAF aircraft. During the early eighties he played a key role in the test and evaluation of the DARIN Avionics and Weapon System on the Jaguar aircraft. With this background he established a Dynamic Avionics Integration Rig for the LCA Avionics System and was a key player in the design and development of the LCA Mission Computer and Avionics System
He joined Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE, erstwhile ASIEO) in 1996. He contributed towards the development and integration of Mission Computer, Radar Computer and other Avionics subsystems for the Su30 MKI aircraft. As the Chief Designer and Project Director of the MiG27 avionics upgrade, he has successfully upgraded the aircraft which is currently in Squadron Service, delivering free fall weapons with Precision Guided Munition accuracies. He assumed charge as the Director of DARE, Bangalore in 2011. During his tenure he guided and progressed the development of advanced Digital Electronic Warfare systems for the IAF aircraft.
He retired from DRDO after 40 years of eventful and fruitful service in 2014. He functioned as a DRDO Fellow till Sep 15. Since then he is helping MSMEs as Technology Advisor towards Indigenous development and manufacture of products in the Aerospace and Defence sector under DPP16 and Make India program. He is the recipient of AGNI Award for excellence in Self Reliance for the year 2003 and DRDO Performance Excellence Award for the year 2008.
