Dr. LV Krishnan is Adjunct Faculty, International Strategic and Security Studies Programme, National Institute of Advanced Studies. Dr. Krishnan retired as Director of Safety Research and Health Physics Programmes at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research at Kalpakkam in 1997. Dr. Krishnan joined the Department of Atomic Energy in 1958. He graduated from the DAE Training School in 1959 and joined the Health Physics Division at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC). Dr. Krishnan studied Reactor Technology at the Oak Ridge School in the US. He was associated with safety analysis of several nuclear installations including the reactors at Tarapur, Rajasthan, Trombay and Kalpakkam as well as Radiological Facilities at Trombay. He worked on ‘fast breeder reactor safety aspects’ for a year in France at the Cadarache Research Centre in 1969-70. Dr. Krishnan set up the Safety Research Laboratory at Kalpakkam and initiated computational and experimental work on fast reactor safety issues. He also established and tested an Emergency Preparedness Plan for Kalpakkam facilities. In 1996, he spent six months as Visiting Scientist at the Department of Engineering and Public Policy, Carnegie Mellon University, USA assisting in the preparation of a thesis reviewing Indian civilian nuclear power programme.
